This K Balachander-directed movie might be five decades old, but it was the film that introduced Rajinikanth. The veteran made his debut with this romance drama alongside Kamal Haasan. Rajinikanth played the supporting role of Abaswaram in the movie, which centres around the theme of the age gap in relationships. Srividya played the female lead.

    Thalapathi (1991)

Helmed by ace director Mani Ratnam, Thalapathi is based on the epic Mahabharata, but with a modern spin. Rajinikanth essayed the character of Surya, inspired by Karna. His performance as an abandoned son, a loyal friend and a grieving lover touched many hearts. Thalapathi also featured Mammootty in a key role.

    Baashha (1995)

Baashha, directed by Suresh Krissna, marked one of Rajinikanth’s most iconic roles. In the film, he was an autorickshaw driver, Manickam, who, in a bid to protect his family, is forced to confront his violent past. The movie is packed with intense action sequences, emotional turmoil, powerful dialogues and of course Rajinikanth’s signature swag, making it a must-watch.

    Enthiran (2010)

S Shankar, known for his grand cinematic ventures, directed this one. Rajinikanth played dual roles — a scientist and a robot. Enthiran, a sci-fi, revolves around scientist Dr Vaseegaran, who creates a robot, Chitti. He is programmed to protect the mankind and feel human emotions. Rajinikanth’s acting chops in the film were above par.

    Vettaiyan (2024)

Rajinikanth essayed the character of SP Athiyan in this TJ Gnanavel directorial. As a maverick police officer fighting ruthless criminal activities in education, Rajinikanth brought his classic flair to the cop drama. Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier and Rana Daggubati were a part of Vettaiyan as well.
