Punjab Becomes First State to Enact Sports Development Act

In a landmark decision to bolster sports in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has given the green light for the implementation of the Punjab State (Development and Promotion of Sports) Act, 2024, making Punjab the first state in the nation to do so.
Chief Minister Mann highlighted that the Act aims to adopt best practices from national and international levels to elevate sports within the state, ensuring a transparent and merit-based selection process for athletes. He emphasised that this Act will be pivotal in establishing a legal framework that promotes transparency within sports associations.

CM Mann further elaborated that this Act mandates a fair and impartial selection process for athletes representing their districts at the state level, their state at the national level, and the country on the international stage. He added that this will also ensure the responsible and efficient utilisation of government funds by sports associations.
He stated that electronic copies of documents and accounts will be accessible to the Director of Sports, Punjab Government. A five-member committee, comprising the General Secretary, two senior coaches, and two distinguished players, will be responsible for selecting the team/players to represent the district or state.
Bhagwant Singh Mann assured that player appeals will be addressed within seven days by the Dispute Resolution Committee, headed by the Deputy Commissioner/Administrative Secretary.
